page two......

Some kid at my son's school asked him if he was gay because he's always reading a book. He said, "Dude, that is not what makes you gay. And, no, I'm not." And in the locker room some kid keeps asking my son why he doesn't wear boxers. He asked, "Are you poor and can only afford those underwear?" This other kid really thought my son only had one pair of underwear because he sees him wearing the "same" tighty-whities every day. Seriously, do 12 year old boys care what kind of underwear the other boys are wearing?!?!

Scottmom - I didn't let myself respond to your post earlier because I was mad at my own husband and was about to take it out on yours. But, really, two questions:

If the stuff in the boxes isn't needed, isn't in the way and isn't bothering anyone then who cares?!?! I have my own stack of unpacked boxes and I'm just about ready to throw them all out in the driveway so hubby has to drive around them to get in and out. THEN he'll have something to complain about.

Why doesn't volunteer work garner the same respect as paid work? If we were making money I suspect our spouses would be a lot more supportive and understanding about how hard we work. Instead, it's seen as some frivolous hobby that we should only be doing in our 'spare' time. That makes me so mad! I think we all deserve a huge pat on the back (and some of LUV's chocolate cake) for all of the work that wouldn't get done if it weren't for us hard working, dedicated volunteers.

OK, I think I'm done ranting now.....

It's hard not to generalize, because kids are kids- "out of the mouths of babes" kids know only what we teach them nad they are sponges who absorb their environments... some kids don't come from "stable homes" or what is conventional. The reality is, I can only teach my child what is "right" and what is "wrong", not everyone elses... I try to tell my kids that everyone is different and some kids are not taught the same things, so, it's their job to be an example and teach those kids.

Yeah, I know the kid that mine is geeting the naked stuff from. I wasn't evesdropping, just in ear shot, but I heard the mother say they are having some "behavior issues" with this one. Not sure what is going on at home, but I do know this is a very unconventional family.

my child too heard the naked (and worse) stories out of the mouths of 5yrs olds
i confronted the parent of the child, and the parent said, oh thats nothing, boys will be boys, it could be worse (and told me a worse school story) etc etc kind of like, -do you live on the moon, this is 'normal' banter for 5 yr olds, and where have you been - type of reply.

some parents are un-parents.

and, thats precisely one reason why schools SHOULD do more with teachng values, to replace what some kids obviously dont get at home.

I tell you if someone made that "cute naked" comment to my child I'd go nuts too. I'd be concerned not just for my child, but the child who said it. Where did he hear that kind of talk? Is there something going on at home that the school should get involved with? I know in working with kids in the classroom that sometimes they will start telling you about things they do at home or things others at home do and there have been a couple of times I've spoken with the teacher and principal. One time the principal gave me this "we know and we're working it, but I can't confirm that to you" kind of look. Sometimes you meet a child you just want to take home with you so they can know what a normal family is like and how it feels to be truly loved. Other times I just want to slap the parent up side the head and ask them what the heck they were thinking.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

You know, my kindergartener has been coming home w/all of this naked malarchy, too. Are you sure you don't go to our school!? lol

Thanks for all of the advice everyone, I really appreciate it. I'm glad to know I'm not just nutty. I've emailed the teacher to get a time to go & talk to her. I was told by my girlfriend last night (who is also on school board) that I had to "nip this $#!@ in the bud", & that is what I'm going to do. These are good kids, save one (and I know which one it is, too!!) I'll let ya'll know how it turns out!

Have a great day!
