The internet has come in pretty handy for homework help around here! My son is lucky though. He has a literary geek for a mom and a math/science geek for a dad. He's all on his own when it comes to social studies though...
I had such a girly day today. I got highlights, nails, tanned, the works! It's not like me but I needed some pampering. My husband is going to come home tomorrow and wonder what the heck happened to his wife! No grease under my fingernails, to trans fluid in my hair, no pasty white "I spend too much time in the garage" skin.
I learned a lot today too. There is nothing like a Southern beauty salon! Phew. It really is true that you can say anything about anyone if you just start every comment with, "Bless his/her heart but," Lord only knows what they said about me after I left but I suspect my own heart was blessed several times.

The mutlitplying decimals was the worst for me! My daughter showed me some convoluted method involving diagonal lines, moving numbers.........hair was pulled, tears were involved (mine - not hers!) so I did what any sane parent would do - had her call her best friend to help her with it! Still haven't been able to figure out what the purpose of that lesson was.

You know all these difficult to grasp concepts make it hard for parents to help with homework or even understand what there child is doing in the classroom(Are they learning a lot or not?). Schools(well most) want parental involvment, but that can be difficult if you can't even understand what's going on yourself. I was helping my son with math a few days ago. He was multiplying numbers with decimals. He had missed part of the classroom lesson due to being in a TAG class so I don't know whether he missed some important instructions, misunderstood the instructions, or if this was the way they taught it, but it was very confusing. I showed him the way I had learned to multiple with decimals and he was thrilled because it was so easy.
My husband and I are relatively intelligent and well-educated people. If we struggle to understand the methods, I can't imagine what it's like for a parent who didn't do well in school themselves.
