room "parents"

Lanette ~ I too would LOVE a copy of that "room parent handbook". We are in desperate need to get the parents at our school more involved. I think this would be a great tool to help with communication as well as getting volunteers throughout the year. Thanks in advance! This email address is being protected from spambots. I made up a handbook with my room parent committee as well. It also includes games and activities that have been indexed by grade level. Our PTO is in charge of 3 schools with room parents. We found it necessary to have a "go-to person" at each school. We asked the teachers for their help. They made an announcement at a curriculum night/open house meeting. The teachers then helped with selection of the person that they would like to have as head room parent. If anyone would like this info please e-mail me. We have 2 room mothers per class. We send out something in May for the following school year. We also have a Room Mother meeting in August before school begins and we pass out a booklet detailing their duties, listing all room mothers, etc. Our room moms plan all class parties, get field trip drivers, etc. Some years, we have too many volunteers, some years we have to call and recruit volunteers. You can probably make it with one parent per class, but two would be nice.

We have Room Parent sign up sheets at Open House. Parents can sign up to be Head Room Parent or for areas like treats for parties, helping with yearbook pages, workign spring carnival, etc. We're adding some things to the list for next year in areas where we were weak on help. We also have a person(s) who are Room Parent Coordinators. They get the program set up and then the room parents are provided with class list and are contacted when help is needed for various events. It works pretty well.

That sounds almost identical to what we do, except we have Volunteer Coordinators who set up the room parent program. I know one of the schools in our area has a Head Room Parent as a board position.
