We also get our room parents at the Open House in the begining of the year. Here they sign up with the class that their child is in to be either a room parent or a help for different things the teacher might need during the year.
The kids dont know who their teacher is until two weeks before school starts and most parents want to be in the one their child is in.
Also two weeks after open house and we have all the room parents. The PTO sponsors and Room Parents Tea for all of them with little thank you gifts and treats.
Our school also has a "Volunteer" program that all parents signing up for things has to go through which covers how to handle kids what the school expects, etc. Thats provided by the school the pto doesnt handle that though.
