our school has a block party the second week of school, they cookout hot dogs, have a dj and some stations set up for the kids. It is really great when it is done outside in the courtyard, lots of families attend.
For our open house in late September we host our bookfair, serve refreshments and last year started the Lanigan scavenger hunt. Each family received aclue sheet that sent them all over the school, once they were at the right point there was a special mark that they had to put on their sheet. The last clue lead them to the Pto info table and they received a small prize. The teachers loved it because it actually had the families going to rooms they generally skipped. It was easy to do and we will easily do it again!

We have a "Bulldog Bash" 2 days before school starts. The kids bring their school supplies - it makes the first day so much easier! - they find out who their teacher is - but the teachers aren't present, can buy memberships, spirit wear, yearbooks, etc.. We offer free popsicles as a snack. We make great money to start the year out and the kids love reconnecting with each other!
We do a sno-cone social before the kids even know who thier teachers are! We also have PTO memberships available and volunteer sign up sheets.
Then we have the open house about two weeks into school with pizza and various displays of events and extra curricular activitites. again we have memberships available and volunteer sign up sheets.
