Open House

Just another quick note - there are 6 of us on the board and we rotate turns at the table so no one is stuck there through the whole open house!

If you don't have that many people on your board maybe you could ask a couple of committee chairs or even some parents that help out regularly.

Our school also has an 'all school' open house about the 2nd week of school. We set up a table right in a hallway that gets the main amount of traffic and it also happens to be surrounded by the music room, the library, the cafeteria, the computer lab and kitty-corner from the gym. We're in the parents line of sight and they are able to hit all the 'extras' (besides their children's regular classroom) all at once!

We set up great signs that advertise the events we host throughout the year and we also put out volunteer sign-up sheets for each event. It's GREAT! It's the best time to catch all the parents in one place and the "advertising" catches their eyes, they come over, ask questions, get interested and sign up!

Ours is pretty much the same as shawns...it gets parents where they genrally may not go. As far as having someone explain it we hand them out at the door to families as they come in and it has directions on it so that no one is tied up explaining it. When they get it all completed then they up at the pto table to pick a prize. Doesnt take much to do and adds some fun!

Ok, I do have a question. Our "open house" is about 2-3 weeks into the school year and this is when the parents get to meet with the teachers and see what the lesson plans are.

But we do have an "orientation" day the Friday before school starts on Monday. That is the day when the kids can come to school w/parents and get any last minute supply lists, find their class room, bus schedule, etc.

Not every student shows up for this, I'm thinking that in order to do a scavenger hunt, we would need to put the sheets in the kindergarten rooms only and have a PTO member explain what it is. The teachers are usually too busy to take much one on one time that day.

It's been a long day, am I thinking correctly?
