Love the book reading idea. Anything to help children understand the world is bigger than their immediate communities makes global citizens in my mind. Themed parties with foods from the area/country of the month .... MMM... count me in! What about trying to get in touch with educators from the place you are studying - could maybe get a letter & picture from a class of the same age or talk via video phone if school has the media option. This is a great opportunity not only for your gang but for other kids around the world.

Oooo, my fun-friend and I decorated the library with all kinds of maps one year. The reading theme was Read Around the World with the catch phrase Where has your book taken you?. When students met reading goals their school photos were pasted to travel themed die cuts (globe, USA shape, car, truck, plane, shoe, etc) and taped to the library wall. It was a ton of fun!

ok--I need some grown up help. I am having to put together a project that will involve families with reading with their child. I have come up with a "world" theme. Essentially, the child reads a book with the parent and then together they complete a postcard like you normally would on one side and then with a drawing of a scene from the book, or something about the location--ie--mexico, they can draw a pinata. We will have a big map up, and can stick pins into the locations. The postcards would go up on the bulletin board for everyone to read after we have shared them in class. I thought about doing a once a month celebration at the end of the month and we pick a country that has been read about that month, and explore it further with a little party. Like Mexico, we could make hats and a pinata.
So my question is, is this dumb?? We are talking 3rd grade. And if not dumb, i need a catchy title. i thought maybe "globe trotting" or soemthing smart like "Books can open the world"????????????????????????????????????????

i am so hung up on this and didn't want to do the bear in a backpack with a journal idea.

Honest thoughts!!! it won't hurt my feelings if you think this is dumb.
