We used high school volunteers for our Family Fun and Games Night last year. It was great! It meant that only my co-chair and I had to do any work that night and it was minimal. We actually got to spend time with our families! We weren't looking forward to clean up, but we had a dozen parents who had come and had so much fun that they wanted to help us clean up! NEW VOLUNTEERS!!!!
I say go ahead even if you do only have a handful of families. You may find all the help you need in that group who comes.
Serendiptity, that's a great idea! I forgot that all of our high schools around here have kids who need volunteer hours. We used high school volunteers to help with our Field Day last year and it was a big help.
Good idea! Reminds me I need to find some high schoolers for our February Movie Night.
It is too bad that you did not get a decent response and have a lack of willing volunteers. One thing we have learned to do solely because the parents want to enjoy themselves too is to get older Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and High School students to come in and volunteer to run things like this. Older scouts and High School kids need community service hours. So it works out great. They need the volunteer hours and this frees up the parents and enables them to enjoy events with their families.
I feel for you-it's hard to plan/have activities if you don't know if you have enough help. Often for our group, I don't have alot of volunteers up front but on the night of the event I end up getting lots of people who say they will help out. I've come to expect this and I now know I don't really have to worry. I think I'd still hold the family night-maybe scale back a bit if it helps you feel more comfortable. Once the night starts and people start playing the games, maybe you could ask different, new people to run each one if only for a 1/2 hour or so. I find the kids love to do this stuff too and love to help their parents. Good Luck-we just started having family nights last January and they've been great. We've heard lots of positive responses from parents.
