Family Game Night

We are planning to have our Fun Night in just over 2 weeks time. I've requested the packet (in November), never arrived, I called to day and they said it didn't go out for some reason and will go out next week. Anyhow.... I have been putting some things together for our group in the mean time and have decided to go for a board game type night for now, but may include some of the other more active games as well.

My delima... We will have sectopms set up for different age groups, and 2 to 3 games per section. We are planning 15-20 mins per game and want to rotate people thru without alot of confusion. Does anyone have any suggestions other then a "free for all" when the time comes to change games? We will have parents there with children from preschool to at least 5th grade and beyond. I am sure the parents will want to be at more then one section through the night.

Any suggestions are welcome!
Thanks,
Paula

You know I think the active part of is one of the main reasons it went over so well. Living here in Iowa, December and January are such dismal months for getting outside. Plus there is that big "letdown" after the holidays are over. It felt good to get out of the house and just move around and act silly. I wish I would have taped the sound of those kids laughing as their parents stumbled around blindfolded in the Mom & Dad Calling game. It was priceless! Can't wait to get the pictures developed and put on our website!

We're hearing tons of great reviews like this on our Fun & Games Night. It's proving an especially effective Night for dad involvement. As luvmy points out, it's a very active evening -- not a standard board game night or sit-down night.

Here's the direct link:

It's Fun & Games night, part of our School Family Night series. Fun & Games Night is sponsored by FamilyFun magazine. If you read that magazine, you won't be surprised at the creative and really helpful (free) kit that goes with Fun & Games Night. The FamilyFun team is neat.

I had never heard of it either, but my best friend played it as kid in her town. You put a number on everyone and then form a circle around one person who has a ball they toss into the air. As they toss, they call out a number. Everyone runs away from the ball except the person with that number. They run to the ball and catch it. When they catch it they yell "SPUD!" Everyone freezes and then the catcher rolls the ball at someone's feet. If they hit the person, that person gets an "S" and becomes the thrower. If they miss they get and "s" and become the thrower. You're out when you have SPUD. It's a nice game, because so many people can play at the same time(we had 30 in a group) and it's pretty simple. Even little ones can roll a ball and toss it in the air(it doesn't matter how high). Check out the School Family Nights section on this site. It has details. The planning packet we got was wonderful.

Had our Game Night this past Friday. What a blast!! The games were great-the Group Juggling was a little tough for younger kids, but Mom & Dad Calling was hilarious(we even did the kids with the parents spread out yelling "HEY"), and S.P.U.D. was incredibly popular. We ended our evening with the Shoe Relay(watch out for stinky feet)and everyone left with a big smile on their face. We had over 200 people and tons of request to make Family Nights a regular thing. Make sure you have lots of room to do this and we would serve dinner at the next one. We did ours from 6-8pm so the snacks were devoured!
