Okay - my e-mail is filling up with requests - our Board game night was considered a "Math" night for a few of the grants we receive.

Here is the scheme:

Board Game Night

Scheme: Have a Family Board Game Night in the Gym on the cafeteria tables. No admission charge. Families BYO games.

Chess
Checkers
Guess Who?
Junior Tribond
Trouble
Chutes & Ladders
Yahtzee
Memory
Boggle
Connect 4
CandyLand
Uno
Dominoes
Battleship
Blankets or quilts to sit on if you want to game on the floor.
Please - make sure all games are complete with parts as well as additional items needed (like paper/pencils for Yahtzee)
Clearly mark your games to avoid confusion.

PTO pays for popcorn and juice. No video games allowed. Have it on an evening when there is no school the next day. Great event for the winter. (watch for football playoffs, tho)

January 2003 - 60 people showed up (10 degrees outside!!) – Had another in May, 2003 – it bombed – weather was too nice!

Volunteers needed: 6
- Make popcorn
- Greet Parents/Families
- Serve Juice & Popcorn (2 people)
- Fill popcorn bowls
- An outgoing person to put families into gaming groups, if needed

Supplies:

Pencils (for Yahtzee)
Magic Marker – make name tags for each parent that comes in.
Name Tags – for volunteers and all parents
Popcorn – we used 3 pounds
Popcorn Oil – We used one 12 oz bottle
Orange Drink mix – we used 1 gallon of orange syrup
Cups – 100
Paper Towels – two rolls
LARGE Bowls – the big tupperware white bowls – two – to dump popcorn into.
Serving Bowls – 20
Popcorn Poppers – two Stir Crazy Popcorn Poppers
Popcorn Scoops – measuring cups for oil and popcorn
Boom Box – with music quietly playing – Disney tunes or ??

TIMING:
ONE MONTH BEFORE

– Call High School Honor Society teacher – ask for SIX honor students to volunteer and play games with us. (note: always ask for more than you need – they don’t always show up).

- Make Flyers

- Submit Facility Use Request Form to use the Gym.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE
- Give flyers to school office to send home.
- Buy Supplies
- Notify Local Newspaper for a photo opportunity – the paper needs a MINIMUM 2 week notice on this.

ONE WEEK BEFORE
- Line up Volunteers
- Confirm Honor students with teacher contact.

NIGHT OF EVENT.
- Arrive 20 minutes early to greet volunteers and assign tasks.
- Set up food/drink .
- Start popping popcorn.
- Take cooler into kitchen to make orange drink – set the cooler on a kitchen roller cart – very heavy!!
- Serve drinks ½ full to avoid spillage.

As people arrive, greet them and offer a table to them to start playing. Our volunteers will serve them juice and popcorn. Have the adults wear a name tag with their names on it.

Have the Honor Society students sit in on some of the games – especially if there are many small children involved.

If you run out of tables, hopefully some people brought quilts and you can put a group of older kids on the floor in the corners of the gym, or spill out into the hallways if needed.

If families come without games, try and introduce them into other families playing games, or if someone brought an extra game, get them into that, too.

TEN MINUTES BEFORE END
Blow a whistle to give everyone a ten minute warning.

Stop popping popcorn/serving juice and start cleaning up.

END OF EVENT
Thank Every Family for coming as well as the volunteers.
Try to get some feedback from the families, if they liked it or not.

Clean up – wash out drink coolers in kitchen.

AFTER EVENT
Send thank you notes to all volunteers.
Submit any expenses to Treasurer.
Write a follow up report for the file, if anything needs to be changed or what worked, and what didn’t.
If newspaper took pictures, submit pictures for file.

Send an e-mail to me, if you'd like the flyer.
