I have thought the same thing many times. Why am I running this when I have been at this school a million times it would be nice if someone did this for us for a change.
But yet on the otherhand I know the volunteers we do get at the school and for PTO are important so I have been doing it for the past 3 years.
I would feel uncomfortable saying too hey the school should be doing this so I guess if someone is going to do it, it might as well be the PTO.

Just my 2 cents

I just can't understand the idea of the PTO, a volunteer organization that volunteers more time than just about anyone in and for the school, having to run an event to honor the volunteers of the school. I mean think about this...

I understand that what you're really doing is thanking those that helped, but who benefits? The children of course, but in this regard the staff and the administration of the school. Without us these Principals and teachers would not have anywhere near the successs that they do.

As JHB mentioned above, I feel that this recognition should be handled by the school staff. They should be appreciative of all that we do. I know we don;t do it for the appriciation, but sometimes it feels good to be appreciated, and this seems like the way to do that. Could you imagine the school staff having to plan and setup the Teacher Apprication week?

In my town one of the elementary schools (that's one out of five) invites every single person who volunteered within the school to a breakfast that is 100% planned and run by the school staff. To me this really shows appreciation for those that volunteer.

The problem is that my children's school is NOT the one doing this. I have heard other PTOers and volunteers inquire about this, but I'm not sure how I can affect change regarding this. For example, should I as President mention to the Principal that "Hey, you guys really should have an event to celebrate us volunteers." That just seems a bit presumptuous to me and I would be very uncomfortable.

I'm very interested in ideas regarding this.

Well, we started two years ago and had a picnic. The first year we invited over 50 volunteers and we only had about 10 people show up. The second year we did the same thing and we had less then that we were very disappointed. We even gave gifts (hanging baskets to the ones who volunteered the most hours)

This year we decided to do nothing. It was a waste of money. We really want to honor our volunteers because we appreciate them.

I have mailed thank you notes and have even called and left a message thanking them for their time.

One year our teachers supplied this wonderful breakfast for the group but they haven't done it since. We can't figure out what we have done--since that year we have gave more money and more things for them.
It's a joke but we are hoping that one year they will do it again.

At our meetings we also do snacks--that has been a nice addition also.

Do you have Chick-fil-A fast food there? Ours offers cards for a free sandwich and it says something about volunteering...just an extra to give out as people help.

Our elementary volunteer appreciation is handled by the school. They organize a luncheon and ask every teacher/staff member to makes lists of anyone who has volunteered in any capacity. They send invitations plus make general announcements inviting everyone to the volunteer luncheon.

It's organized as a come-and-go activity (nice for working parents). The principal usually purchases a main dish like the several of the party size lasagne pans. Then staff contribute salads and desserts.

At some point (or points) the principal does a little announcement about how much they appreciate all volunteers. Usually there's a certificate. My favorite is a colorful "check" they ordered payable for "One Million Thanks".

These are available from several sources. Here's one link purely as an example. (I've never used this company.) Some of the ideas in the previous posts are good also. The check is nice for a situation where you aren't sure of the numbers. Very easy to keep a stack of blanks and fill out more as you need.

Whether the school or the PTO hosts such an event, I'd recommend keeping it simple.

As a volunteer, I really liked this approach. Nothing overwhelming. No well-intentioned, but unnecessary trinket to find a place for (or worse - dust!). Simple, sincere - a token gift that makes the recipient smile and feel appreciated.

To give to you with lots of thanks

Oh I like that. Thank you!
