Who should be an account signer?

I am so glad to see so many Pres. on the accounts. My outgoing treas and Principal told our new treas that we (the co-presidents) could not have our names on the account. I have read and re-read the bylaws and it never specifies who is on our accounts, something that will hopfullly be changed soon. We also want two signatures on checks but have been told that wasn't a good idea either. Our treasurer prefers that there be more sigs. Our principal really does not have a say in this does she? (although I think she is a great principal).

I must be losing my mind... I have something else to add: We have never used debit cards. We have never run into a problem with a store/vendor not accepting checks and if we did we usually would take care of it ourselves (ie. credit card, cash, etc..) and submit the bill/receipts for reimbursements.

FEDUP45:
Why would you be peeved that the President is a signer? Most Presidents are signers on their groups account. I do not understand what you meant about the president should know "EVERYTHING"? and you are the VP who does not want the job..... explain a little better ( or I am losing my mind and don't get it: LOL!) :D

what do you do with debit cards?

Some stores don't take checks.

Right now we have one of the Co treasurer(we need 2.. its a hard job) and a Pto Secertary that sign on checks.. I was a little peeved that the PREZ should be on the check... ( I'm the vp and don't want the job) but i thought the Prez should know EVERYTHING that goes on!!!

Our bylaws require two signatures on every check (like the others said, our bank can't enforce that rule, but no body knows that!). Our authorized signers are the prez, trez, and one vp. We don't include any school staff because our system has worked fine in the past. While our principals have always been very respectful of PTO business, it's just not been necessary for us to consider adding the principal, for example. Sometimes it's a little inconvenient to find that second signer, but usually no more than a one day delay.

As far as the school secretary goes, we would never consider including her on our authorized signer list. She has nothing to do with PTO money. At least our principal is a member of our Exec Board, so one could make an argument for his signing, but not the secretary. I should add that we have our own bank account that doesn't run through the school.

We have the treasurer, president, and principal as signors. Some groups are very adament about NOT having a school official on the account. However, we've found it to be very practical. Note, we are a 501(c)(3) organization.

Our checks all require two signatures. I don't believe our bank would prevent a check from being cashed with only one. But this is one of our internal requirements and is checked during the audit each year.
