How could this person possibly have no clue that she has done anything wrong? If she took money that other parents pre-paid for merchandise, and used it as "her" own personal money to do with as she chose, how is that not stealing?

When she used the money, she probably had every intention of paying it back at the end of the month. But when her check comes in, and she has to buy groceries, pay the electric bill, the phone bill, etc., don't you think those items will come first before she re-pays the PTO? If she was able to justify in her mind using the money in the first place, she'll justify not paying it back as well.

And even if she does pay it back, do you offer interest free loans to other members of the PTO? This is basically what your Treasurer has received.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but this is one subject that just burns me. To me, stealing from the PTO, which is basically stealing from the children, is akin to stealing from your church. I'm sure we are all tempted when we handle large sums of money . . . who's gonna know . . . I'll just pay it back before anyone finds out . . . I deserve it for all I do . . . BUT, you just can't do it. The parents and the children have put their trust in you to handle the money honestly.

I believe you need to confront your Treasurer ASAP. Make sure the Principal is with you as a witness. Document everything you do and say to her. If she's already caused this must trouble in just six weeks, it's a definite red flag that she's in the wrong position. See if she would move to a Chairperson position that doesn't handle the money.

I sincerely hope she pays back all she's "borrowed". Good luck!

First off, I am not actually new here...have been registered for years with a different name, but I feel that it will protect the integrity of our PTO if I don't air our "dirty laundry" before I can figure out what to do...that said here is my problem: We have a new Treasurer whom I put my trust in and encouraged to run for the position, this is my third year as president and I truly felt this person would do a great job. We just completed our fall fundraiser and it has come to my attention that our treasurer, who's son sold a lot of merchandise, enough to win a prize for being a "top seller" did not deposit the money into our account for the stuff they sold (this was a pre-pay sale that she was supposed to collect the money when the people ordered). When I asked her about this she said she would put the money in at the end of the month when she got a check because she did not have the money to cover it right then (single mom...does not work, receives social security etc..). I have also discovered that she has made arrangements for herself and our pto secretary to defer paying for the sweatshirt orders we just completed "until they get the extra money" this too was a "pre-pay" sale, they actually discussed the arrangements before our meeting started and members heard this discussion and brought it to my attention after the meeting. Our group has a locked closet at our school to keep all our PTO items, we have always left the key in the office and pick it up when we need to use it, our treasurer decided to take the key home and have a copy made for herself and she told me what she did, when I told the principal that he might want to ask her because he is responsible for all the keys, she lied to him and told him she didn't have a key made. I have discovered all of this stuff out in the past two days, along with the knowledge that she had taken all the fall fundraiser stuff home to count and then told people that she was real nervous having it there because she does not have a lock on her front door! I have had a meeting with the principal and our vice president to kind of brainstorm and I have asked that they give me till Monday to figure out what we should do...to be honest I told them I needed to "talk" with my fellow PTO TODAY friends and get some educated advice!! I guess my dilemma is do we give her the opportunity to put the money in the account before she picks up the merchandise and tell her to NEVER let it happen again or do we let her know the facts and ask for a resignation. I am so confused as to what we should do, I have worked so hard to improve the image of our PTO...three years of crap and things are finally going so good...new people fresh ideas etc. Now I am afraid that this will tarnish our image again and with me being the President the membership will be looking at me for the solution and I really don't know what to do. I don't want to humiliate this person, I do like her but I feel it is my job to protect the integrity of our group. I feel so bad for the people who did not purchase any sweatshirts because they did not have the money and of course one of these people overheard the side deal the treasurer was making for someone else. Keeping in mind all of the stuff has happened in the first six weeks of school and her first six weeks of being treasurer it is terrifying to think of what may be next!! By the way she has no clue that she has done anything wrong and I don't even know how to approach the situation without making her feel attacked. The principal and school secretary does not want her in the building because she is now privy to students personal info just by being around the office and she is gossipying and/or giving her two cent when she feels like it...even when two parents were fighting in front of the school and the police and superintendant was called in...our treasurer stood there listening to all of the discussions and kept interupting and when she was asked by the principal to leave she refused and said she was a witness so she had a right to know what was going on. She is very "gossip hungry" and I chose to cut her off when she starts, but I know it is hurting our group as a whole when our treasurer is running her mouth about things she only thinks to be the truth. I am so very sorry this is so long and if you actually made it this far Thanks for Listening!! Any suggestions???
