Our Board is made up of both SAHM and one that has a full time gig. It's a balance and I really don't think that balance is going to be with this board until it has to happen that way. We have had a couple boards with only SAH gals and there was the good and the bad, it was so easy for us to meet at the park and talk over things then forget to announce tothe members what we did! BAD! Our best years have been when we can have balance.
You all are making me think of those commercials for Walgreens on every corner in a perfect world...I don't know, I like Shawn's world. I don't have to wear two inch heals and a hoop skirt while dusting.
it is not neccessarily true that " the Principal can't help you out".... the principal (or sometimes the district office) is who gives permission to the parent group to do ANYTHING on school grounds. doesnt matter if parent group is independent or not, the principal and or super have ULTIMATE power and say in what goes on , on the grounds, and do have sway in that regard.
Wow,I don't even know what to say other than she should be dismissed from chair. I am a stay at home Mom and Co-chair on our PTO board. The rest of my board inclueding my Co-chair partner, are working Mom's, one works in the school. What is the big deal as to who works or not? We all have the same thing in common, we are parents and we want a good education for our children. She is destroying the purpose behind the PTO.
That is such a shame and she should be ashamed of her self! Unfortunately, PTO and PTA's are private organizatons, and the Principal can't help you out. You can look into having her impeached. I know this sounds crazy, but we looked into it ourselves and it is possible. Look into your by-laws or start a petition to have her and anyone else ejected from the board. You have just as many rights as she does she may be a board member, but you are a member too. Good luck

ok to be PC, working father is redundant too. (but i dont mind when shawn is unPC, in fact, i like it, provokes thoughts.)
all genders work, wehter for pay or charity, for third parties or for family. no difference. but some people always want ot take sides and make it us vs them, those are the losers, and the groups with little overall parental support, the ones creating diviseness over nonsense issues.
your vote is the one way to show how you feel about those attittueds, if in fact the group leaders adhere to such nonsense issues. in the meanitime, you can keep hleping the school and classroom directly, outside of the parent group, if you dont agree with the philospohies of the ones running the organized group.
While we're on the topic - the "non-volunteer" comment I despise the most is "I can't help, I work!" With my sweetest southern smile I explain that in addition to being co-president, I am a mother of 3, a wife, volunteer at the school and for my kids' sports teams, and oh yeah - I work full time, too. I take time off work (unpaid or vacation time) for things I must do during the day. We have executive committee meetings at 9:00 a.m., and general meetings at 7:00 p.m.
Suggest that your high school honor society students, who are in need of service hours, provide baby sitting services and ask for evening meetings at least every other month. Also - stress the things that don't require "daytime" volunteering - clip those box tops, count them into baggies of 50 (exactly 50!), or anything else that can be done at home.
We've also taken to using the phrase "thank you for your gifts of time, talent and treasure" some people would simply rather write a check than help (give them MY address!) and that's fine - we need all types.
