As per the NCLB Act, 1% of title 1 money that is given to schools must go towards parent involvement. Our PTA title 1 committee has agreed to use the 1% (which amounts to $5,885.00) towards: ELL Classes (English Language Learner) for parents and parent workshops. THe title 1 funds are used for refreshments, books,newspapers, dvd's, a television to broadcast the DVDS,speakers for the workshops etc.

Though I can't speak for other schools, I know that Title 1 and 3 funds in our school are broken down by category. One of those categories includes parent involvement.
We have to show how we spend every cent even after the itemized request to the district. I have no idea what Federal or State mandates are for how this money is spent, but I do know what our district requires and that is parent involvement.
Though our budget doesn't have funds for a block party, if we did and thought that would get parents to read to their kids more and get involved in their education, we would spend the money to do it.
Title funds in our district are not given to the PTO to spend. All expenditures go through the Title Liason for the district.
Maybe it's more like you putting your foot in your mouth for speaking before knowing what is required.
As someone who is a member of my school's Planning and Management Team, I am well versed in what our district requires as this team helps plan how to appropriately spend our allotted Title funds. Honestly, this board is a place for sharing knowledge and helping others make the best of what they have for their schools, not for voicing an unsubstantiated "shaming" opinion.

OMG! Where in the world have I been??? I feel like I've had my head stuck....in the sand. I never knew that Title 1 money would pay for some of these things. I really have to do some major research, we could really use some of that money for our group.
By the way I know for a fact that we are a Title 1 school, just didn't really know everything that it covered.
Hi, most districts set aside at least 1 percent of their title 1 for parent involvement. Conferences, transportation costs to the conferences, workshops (title 1 laws, leadership development, health & safety issues, computer training, math, reading, LAN, and science presentations. I'm not sure if it varies from state to state. You should be able to talk with someone from your state's title 1 office. These parent involvement monies are to help parents help their children at home. Try www.NCTIC1P.org

Have you checked into other funding sources besides the Title I monies? The first thing that came to mind when I read your post was Lowe's(home improvement stores) grant programs.
Hi everybody! I have the nickname of Mother Earth, here at my school, because I have been doing an environmental after school club for the past 16 years. We have a beautiful campus thanks to the hard work of our students from grades K-6th. I was told last year that I must abandon my club because Title I money would no longer pay for Mother Earth Club. I am heartbroken and so are the children. I am going to fight to get it reinstated. Is there anyone out there who can offer me any help? Our acomplishments and the benefits of our club are too numerous to mention. Thanks, Mother Earth
