Someone emailed me a question about this issue, so I thought I'd bump up this old thread and see what's been happening this year with all of you.

As for us, it wasn't too difficult a change. Certain candies outlawed, no more snow cones or popsicles, used Gatorade instead of cokes at parties, etc. (And in Feb 2004, they added an exemption allowing FMNV foods to be served at parties/special occasions 3 times per year.)

We are seeing the ripple effect now on the financial side. Our middle school principal said he used to get something like a $1000-$1200 per month as his part of the commission for vending machines. This money was then used to supplement supplies, field trips, etc. The district negotiated a different deal with much less % a couple years ago, then this year's regs limited the times machines could be used and what could be sold in them. Next year, the machines are being removed completely.

One of the side effects is that he now needs to find a way to replace those lost funds and is doing so by taking back the revenue from school dances (next year). Until now, a different school group/club sponsored each dance as a fundraiser. So now THOSE groups will have to find other fundraisers.

What about the rest of you?

Hey, Mom Brooks, great ideas. Just keep that whole "peanut" thing in perspective, too, you know with all the peanut free zones due to allergies. I still love ants on a log (with tomato soup it makes an awesome and healthy last minute supper sometimes for us!)

Oh boy a raisin party! Well that beats nothing, there are some fun nutritional recipes out there. No I am not being a smartaleck. Ants on a log would be pretty good for a party(Celery stalks filled with pb with raisins on top). My kids love Bambinos (mini-pizzas) but they need to be served fresh. You Texans have good imaginations I am sure everything will go great.

I can understand the need for restrictions, my son has a slight weight problem, but I think sometimes the gov. can go just a little overboard. Keep us updated as the year goes along. I am sure Texas will be used as an example.

We can still have our parties, we just have to substitute other items to replace the candy and cokes. Ideas that have come to me so far from others are pretzels and goldfish crackers. We'll figure out more as we go.

LOL. She will learn about fiber soon enough. So does that mean they can still have their holiday and birthday parties?

I thought KY was strict, I guess I will quit complaining. All of our snack and drink machines are turned off until after lunch. At the elementaries we are not allowed to serve any kind of drink or snack until 1 hour after lunch. Not even sno-cones, cocoa, or watermelons. If the school gets caught breaking this rule there is a very steep fine.
