Our superintendant told us recently there will be a lot more changes to this rule and it will be more restrictive. Where's the petition??

melloweer - no, these rules regard what the children consume during the school day. So fundraisers like cookie dough and market day would still be fine.

Although policy-wise, some schools are moving away from candy sales as fundraisers. Some feel it would be hypocritcal to bar candy at school then send the kids home to sell candy bars.

I'd have to say that in our school in Jersey most of the restricted foods wouldn't affect us too much. To my knowledge soda isn't brought into the classrooms for parties etcetera--parental peer pressure; soda is out, juice is in, and the only time I've ever seen candy handed out is during the holidays in goody bags. On occasion we hand out popsicles, but I think that's just for cost reasons--if we had to we had to we'd go for the ice cream or juice pops. From what I've seen our fare is usually cookies and cupcakes, and personally I don't see the nutritional value there if Texas is going to be that picky. I know when my son was in 1st grade the homeroom moms bought craft kits through Oriental Trading, and they would do that at the holidays instead of giving them the regular candy fare.

Actually, it's getting even more restrictive as additonal rules take effect in the coming months that limit sugar, fats, and size/availability of snacks. These rules will also prohibit the sales of any "competitive foods" during the school day - meaning no more bake sales or fundraisers on campus that sell food (like popcorn or ice cream sales to the students). There's also a greater emphasis on fruits and vegetables.

The revised Texas Public School Nutrition Policy takes effect August 1, 2004 with some parts having target dates of 2005-2007 due to existing food service contracts.
