We did sock hops a few years ago and had a juke box (borrowed from a parent), a DJ (a parent), dance contests, and sold root beer floats and popcorn for a nominal fee. We also had a 50's backdrop and took polaroids (lighting set up by a parent who is a photographer). One year the backdrop was a soda shoppe borrowed from a local theater group and another year we used an old console radio (borrowed from yet another parent) and decorated the curtain behind it with a balloon arch, 45 rpm records and musical notes. (Another idea was to use a car from that era, but we weren't able to pull that one off.) We also made some large 45 rpm records out of cardboard and suspended them from the ceiling. We were lucky enough to have the juke box during the week leading up to the sock hop, so we promoted the event by playing it during lunches. Also, the P.E. teachers taught the students 50's dances during their P.E. classes.
I heard of another school in our area which used the 50's as their carnival theme and to promote it, they had a different 50's-related activity each day during the week before the carnival. Unfortunately, the only one I recall is an Elvis look-alike day.

This year we are doing a "50th day of school" sock hop. We plan to have a DJ, polariod booth for pictures, best dressed contest, snowcones, coke floats, popcorn sold in school megaphones, etc. Hope this helps.
Hi, I am looking for any ideas on having a sock hop as our welcome back event. We have done an ice cream social for the past 5 years, and people are getting very bored with it. Any ideas would be appreciated!
