Need help - you opinion please

We are holding a family night at our school this month. We are having an arts night with a musical by the upper grades and also a soup supper.

This event was planned to increase our very small budget (less than $1000)so we can hold a nice teacher appreciation week in May.

Just two and a half weeks from the event I find out the the person chairing the arts portion of the night (a PTO mom) has promised the proceeds from the soup supper to a teacher who is taking a group of kids out of the country on an "exchange" type of program this summer.

The principal and I had discussed making a small donation ($50?) at the end of this year to their program, but not the proceeds from our soup supper.

I guess my question now is, knowing that the past soup suppers only generate a small about $200 profit, what now? By the time we purchase the items for the soup supper, and the craft tables, we will probably do good to come out even. We area small school of low income families. Our fundraisers we have held to this point have raised no money.

This parent has sent in letters to the paper and news stating that the money from the supper will support this program. So now with the teacher happy, expecting a nice size donation I am afraid that the teacher will be disappointed. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
