I'd like to know how much money everyone made on this event. Our school is thinking about doing a walk-a-thon type of event to replace our 2 regular fundraisers we usually do. Thanks.

We just had a successful Heart Walk during February to coincide with heart health month. The students walked (or jumped rope) for 30 minutes during their Physical Education class. We asked students to obtain pledges for the 30 minute walk instead of laps so we didn't have to keep track. We've done 2 walks before and most contributions were not by lap anyway. We contacted a local t-shirt company and they agreed to do shirts at cost. Students who brought in a certain amount in pledges received a heart walk t-shirt. For the next level, they received a shirt and will be taped during our 50's day and which will be televised on a local cable channel. Our PE teacher did a great job keeping the students moving and motivated which helped so get their "buy in".
How about just around your playground or Gymnasium? Our H.S. has a track, so we use that, but go by half laps for older kids and quarter laps for younger ones. We have also measured just by time.
Doing it during school sounds like a good idea in order to get more participation, but we did it on one of the first really nice Saturdays in the Spring (don't forget the rain date). After school is good, but you will need the course already set up or else you will have to figure out how to keep the kids occupied until they can start.
Hey dish! My elementary is in Warren, Michigan --not too far from you...could you or anyone else on the boards let me know how long/far your laps were? We're trying to figure out how far one lap should be.
Did you hold your walk-a-thon after school or weekend? Were there prizes for top donations? a prize raffle? If food was served, was it complementary or a fee?
As you see, I do have a ton of questions...this seems like a lot of logistics to plan out and I want to get moving on it.
we had our first fun run last spring. it was awesome! kids ran/walked for 10-15 minutes (its a lot longer than it sounds!) we hired a dj, had t-shirts made, gave a snack when they were done, passed out water bottles as they turned in their pledges. gave prizes to top person in school, top person in each classroom, top classroom, etc. we're doing our next one in may - everybody is very excited....
