Disbanding PTA Voting Procedures

You couldn't be more right about emotions running high! As for membership status, there was a new online process for registering this year and it lead to significant confusion regarding status. In the end, we assured that all voters were confirmed against a verified membership list. We'd love to let the current PTA "fizzle"; however, that would not happen at our school as there is dissention. While I do not believe that these dissenters represent the majority, I don't want to create a problem for our principal, our school, or our parents in having to choose between two separate organizations.

Are they members or not??
Sometimes emotions run hot during these discussions.
If you are sure the majority wish to leave PTA why not just form a PTO?
There are NO rules that say you cannot start a PTO when there is a PTA, if most parents join the PTO then the PTA will fizzle out. </font>[/QUOTE]

You're absolutely correct - there were those that originally voted (from the "general membership") without being members - that's why we had to start over again. In fact, technically, this will be our 3rd time voting (with still one more to go).

Actually, I'm a parent from there and one of the votes had people there who weren't members to vote....

Generally, I (the president) do preside over the votes; however, since this has been so contentious, I didn't want to run into any further "parliamentary procedure" problems.

We're in California and, based on what I do know, we need to complete this vote and, if it is pro-disbanding, do one more no fewer than 30 days later.

Thanks for the responses (and the support!).

All of these votes (don't even get me started on the craziness of needing three votes to get out -- what state?) are absolutely run by your group and your leadership.

How do you run your other votes? Typically, the president should preside. If regional or state PTA officers are in attendance, they are there as your guests and they have no supervisory or leadership role.

If you provide more specifics, maybe we can help more.
