HELP changing from PTA to PTO

I CAN TELL YOU WHEN I TOOK OVER AS PRESIDENT I DID NOT GET MEUCH HELP FROM THE PTA. WHEN I HAD TO PAY OUR STATE PTA $4.50 PER MEMBER, THAT IS WHEN I STARTED TO DO MY HOME WORK. I PUT TOGETHER A COMMITEE AND LOOKED AT ALL THE PRO'S AND CON'S.
WHAT I FOUND OUT IS NOW THAT WE HAVE PTO TODAY THERE IS NO NEED TO BELONG TO A PTO. YOU WILL GET ALL THE HELP YOU NEED WITH JUST A PHONE CALL. PTO TODAY PUTS ON A GREAT CONFRENCE FOR A LOT LESS THEN THE PTA. THE TWO BIGGEST REASON I FOUND WAS THE NATIONAL PTA IS FOR WHAT EVER THE NATIONAL TEACHERS ASSOCATION IS FOR SO WHY GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THEM WHEN YOU CAN KEEP IT AT YOUR SCHOOL.
THEN WE MADE A MOTION AND HAD A RFERENDOM VOTE AND DIS BANDED THE PTA AND BECAME A PTO. WE DID NOT WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY, WE ROLLED IT INTO THE PTO. OUR BANK LET US KEEP THE SAME ACOUNT AND JUST CHANGED THE NAME ON IT. FIRST YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER THE PTO AS A BUISNESS WITH YOUR STATE AND GET A FEN. THEN GO TO THE BANK AND THEN APPLY FOR YOU 501 C 3 SO YOU CAN BE A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION.
CHECK OUT PTO TODAY THEY HAVE THE SIDE BY SIDE OF WHY AND WHY NOT

There must be a reason that more school parent groups are part of National PTA than ALL OTHER GROUPS COMBINED!!!

The $1.75 dues seems like a cheap deal to be part of something bigger!

National PTA has more members than The Lions Club, Rotary, and Kiwanis COMBINED!!!

please identify why you are looking to change.
For less than the cost of a Dunkin Donuts coffee, you get to be part of the largest national voice for children!
If ALL you want to accomplish is raising money for your one school, form a booster club! You don't have to charge membership, have by-laws or really run elections.
If you want structure, and A SAY IN POLICY look closely at what PTA has to offer.

While I cannot answer your question, our school is looking at the same change PTA to PTO. I would be interested in any & all information you receive. We are at the beginning stages of this process, however I think we would like to accomplish the change over the summer. Kris
