Regarding the $30 for the EIN, yes, you are correct--it is free. I was referring to filing Articles of Incorporation with the state.
Regarding spending our PTA money down to zero, we can do that, but I like the idea of having some start-up money for next year. If we open an account, then we can transfer some money and use it in the Fall, should we disband.
Given the risks and benefits, do you think it's better if we transfer or spend down to zero?
Come on Tim, if one of the biggest reasons groups change is to keep the $$$ local, how can it be that they don't know they are part of a national organization.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. There's a big difference between the general membership and the leadership of a local PTA. I think a healthy percentage of local leaders likely have a working concept of the PTA affiliation, mainly because they have to write a check evey year to pay for that affiliation. And it's the leaders who 98 times out of 100 explore the pros and cons of affiliation.
It's the general membership I was referring to in the above quote. I think the vast majority of those folks (who account for the vast majority of the 5 million + PTA members) have very little concept of the state and/or national PTA.
Again, this is a quite misleading statistic. Of the 5.75 million PTA members, how many even know they're part of the national PTA? What % sent in 5 bucks to their kids' school because the flier came home asking for the $5. If the acronym said PTA or PTO or HSA or PDQ -- they would have sent in the $5.

On the above quote, sounds like you guys did fine, but I question the validity of the files things (at the very least I'd keep copies, because my bet is that any questions that came down later would fall to you guys, not the district PTA).
And as for the toolkits and things like that -- I believe taking those is nonsense. I understand why you let them go, but the concept behind the PTA asking for them is nuts. You guys paid big money for those tools. It'd be like dropping out of AAA and then AAA coming in and taking back your maps! Crazy.
