better parent involvement

i am trying to get some tutoring programs, some incentive programs; basically i am trying to get them to volunteer for anything. i would also like a better turn out at the meetings. i think we average 6-8 people. i don't know how else to get them to understand that it is not enough to just pay a due you know get involved in their educational process. between you and me i am afraid our school is going tobe next on the chopping block and i want to avoid that.

Not trying to plug Tim and the gang at PTO Today but have you tried the Two Hour Power Pledge. I know...but I am in the process of doing a presentation for our school board and the numbers speak for themselves! We have had an increas from last year to this year of over 70 parents, yes it is two hours but those two hours spread across the board is huge! simple to do...

Dora, we have tried everything to get parents more involved. We invite parents to meetings, breakfasts, etc. No one seems to care. We are lucky if we get 5 people besides PTO officers to attend our monthly meeting. We keep our parents informed about everything we do and what is going on at the school. We started a monthly newsletter this year, and I wonder if anyone even reads it. We just had an appreciation luncheon for the teachers and staff on December 20, 2006, and we always ask parents to donate side dishes and desserts. The turn out this year was pathetic. We usually have way too much food. We even have 150 more students this year than last year due to school closings. We were sure we would need more tables to put the food on. It is so sad that parents aren't involved like they used to be. We did, however, have a good turn out on our Back to School Night celebration. That's the only time people seem to show up, and that's because there was free food. Good luck to you!

Dora, this seems to be the hot topic these days! Which activities in particular are you trying to get more parents involved with?
