Concessions

NJ is going to be implementing a similar law over the next year (I think). It encompasses vending machines AND fundraising sales. I cut out the article but of course now I can't find it. I really don't care either way about the vending machines, but then I don't know if our school makes money on it. Is your state banning the vending machines themselves, or just what goes in them? I believe our law just puts restrictions on the health aspect, so in theory you could fill your vending machines with what you wanted so long as it didn't conflict with the fat/cholesteral/sodium/sugar aspect aspect. Where this is really going to hurt our school is with the upper grades, as they depend heavily on candy sales to fund class trips. I'm curious to see how they deal with it. I'm also curious to see how this is going to affect Market Day--it's very profitable for my group (we average about $900/month). I'm hoping that since this is targeted towards parents we won't be touched.

I found out that our state legislature (Kansas) has a bill up for vote that would eliminate concessions and snack machines at schools. I guess they are worried about the overweight kids. We make money off of those machines and concessions! I too am worried about overweight kids, but come on, they are going to get it somewhere, might as well get it from school so we can make a little extra money. Besides, they are getting a good meal while they are in school. What does any one else think?
