KDW... I am loking for new ideas , I thought your candy day sounded fun... I am part of a very small Catholic school 160 students I think that it might work like the last Friday of the month or something like that. What kind of cany do you use and where do you get it from, and how much do you charge?

Thanks, Heather

Currently our MS and HS are housed together. This fall we will have our own middle schools. We will see what kind of vending machines they have. The current cafeteria has 5 drink machines, a cold food machine and a vending. Plus a multitude of choice in the lunch line.
I hope that decisions the states make in regards to this are reasonable.

We don't have vending machines in our elementary school, just a pop machine in the teacher's lounge and kids aren't allowed in there.

In the middle school, we have a pop machine for the students, and that's it.
We make money on candy bars at the games, and that will cut into our fundraising. I don't know if we will be allowed to do candy bar fundraisers, or anything like that, it wasn't specific.

Illinois:
Rumblings of similar changes going on here too.
Concessions is a big part of our income.

If they eliminate concessions, I want to see them eliminate the Little Debbie snacks, fries, pop, hot pretzels, nachos, etc that can be purchased in the lunch line.

We have a candy day on Fridays for a treat for the children. Big success, few complaints. Principal approves. We encourage proper eating for lunch, this is a treat!

Our reasonably priced concessions are very much appreciated, especially by visiting schools. Good PR!

The excessive money our middle school children have at school is part of the problem. My children have to ask for 50 cents for candy day. But other children come in with $5, $10 and $20. Not appropriate. This promotes excess, not offering the treat of concessions.

Until I was in high school, with exception to extracurricular activites, I never had access to vending machines and even then they were unplugged until after school. I can understand not letting elementary school kids have access, but we have machines in our school that the kids would have to go into restricted areas to get to them and that doesn't happen often and our district has a contract with Pepsi that gives the school a % of the vending sales. I really don't think these laws should limit concessions, they aren't taking the place of a meal and I can't see going to a basketball game and getting a orange. They won't let you have pop in the gym and I don't see why sticky, drippy fruits would be any better.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

Texas phased in fairly strict versions of the Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (FMNV)policies over the last two years.

FMNV is the federal (Department of Agriculture) term, so you'll probably see it pop up.

There have been some "interesting" discussions on the Forum about this topic if you do a search.

Here's our policy in case you want to see it. www.squaremeals.org/fn/render/parent/cha...348_2350_0_0,00.html
