The End is in Sight

After being VP for a year and President for two years in the beginning of this year I vowed, "I will not run again!!" But here it is April and I have agreed to just one more term!! I'm very content with the situation though because we have a new group of very active parents who are going to be on the board with me...none of them were quite ready to be President because this was their first PTO year...we have already discussed the deligations of responsibilities and basically I will be there to help them along but next year they will be more confident to take over. I have really enjoyed this year...this group of parents just take a job and run with it and do an amazing job, I feel totally secure in their abilities and after next year I get to be just...Kenny, Mark and Sam's Mom!!!

I have been on the board for 3 years, but not as President. I was thinking of being President this year until a group of parents starting being active in the PTO and basically trying to run it without being on the board. We had been run very informally prior to that, and we were really caught off guard. We had a couple of nasty meetings where some parents acted like 2-yr olds (no fist fights, though). It seems some parents were spreading rumors and others came to the meeting to complain to the board about some decisions that had been made. Of course, they had all the wrong facts. It is far too negative and malicious for me - I work full time and have 3 kids. I do not need to seek out conflict in my volunteer life, and I know it will be there if I'm on the board next year. So I have decided to "sit out" for awhile and let them learn some leasons on their own. I have at least 6 more years at the elementary school, so perhaps I will be part of the board at a future date.

yeah, I was kind of afraid that I'd just set myself up for another year of it. There did seem to be some interest in it though at our last meeting..... I figure I will pack all the stuff up neatly (more than I got, but that's another story ) and be ready to hand it all over. (I can dream right? ) I'll let you know what happens. maggie

It's been two "long" years and I am also ending my term as President. I certainly have mixed emotions, but feel so proud of all the progress made. The PTO was in quite a mess when I joined-no organization, paperwork, system, etc. Bylaws hadn't been updated or even looked at since 1982! I served these two years with some incredible people and made some friends for life!! I so enjoyed the experience, even though it was hard work and lots of time (all upaid of course). The best part about leaving is knowing I, along with the rest of the Board, made some significant and important changes that will help the children in our school, now and in the future. Also, the new President will do an even more awesome job - she is fantastic! Parting is such sweet sorrow...NOT! With a son in Kindergarten and one in third grade, I have a feeling I'll be part of the team again, someday, somewhere!!!

mykidsmom, I can relate. My youngest is in fifth grade, and my oldest is a senior this year. Talk about being in for the long haul!

I've been the President for three years now with the same VP, and I was VP the year before that. I'd love to give it up and just chair the carnival for next year. However, no one ever wants to take over! I only have one more year at the elementary, so someone will have to step forward, I hope!

Maggie, once you tell them you'll be President again if they can't find anyone else, you've automatically doomed yourself to another term lol!
