zero tolerance for academics

Dear KC Swan,
You are correct the students are given detentions for homework not done, or incomplete, or if they consider it sloppy writting. Also on top of this if the kid turns in the paper the next day they get 10% off the grade they earn on top of that detention. It has really done a lot of negative things in our school, and hurt the kids self- confidence. The kids don't so much think of the teacher as their friends, it's more like a sargent in the military.
Thanks for your reply!

So any student who brings a textbook into school, or who threatens to learn something, will be automatically suspended? ;) I know that isn't what you mean, but it certainly is the image "zero tolerance for academics" conjures up.

I'm assuming this is one of those enforced classwork / homework assignment completion programs. Where a student who fails to complete an assignment is put into detention until the work is done?

Well, I'm certainly no fan of "zero tolerance" programs. Randy Cassingham of "This Is True" says it better than I probably can at www.thisistrue.com/zt.html . The whole point of zero tolerance programs is to institute hard and fast rules which must be blindly obeyed, without regard to any rational thought or sense of proportion. So, I'm already skeptical of the program, and I don't really know anything about it.

I know alot of you are familiar with the zero tolerance for weapons ect. At our school this year the have started the zero tolerance for academics. There are no warnings for anything.
As parents we really do not think it is working well it's bringing down the kids self-confidance.
Has anyone else delt with this progam for academics? If so I would really like to know how things are going at your school.
Thanks!
