Our PTO is an approved 501C3 (Non-Profit) by the IRS and a Public Charity under state law (MA).

Our Charter was approved by the IRS (Articles of Incorporation) and are posted on this page:

Click on the link on the left hand side under the BabelFish ad to see the Charter (PDF format).

polkadot,

We had the general membership generate the Charter. Mostly it was the PTO board, Principal, Vice Principal and a few dedicated parents. We took our time generating the document, but getting consensus rather than pushing it too fast really worked in our favor. Underneath the Charter link is another link to a "Guide to getting Non-Profit/Tax Exempt for a PTO" that describes what our group did to get the successful outcome. Hope it is helpful to you and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

susanrj,

I don't know for sure, but if you are a private school on a military base, isn't the base technically US property which would make you subject to all the laws, including tax law? I assume it would be the same process.

Does anyone have past experience in having the General Membership help in writing or re-writing in our case, the purpose and mission statements of the PTO? There has been much debate over whether we, the Executive Board, should incorporate the ideas and thoughts of the General Membership in our attempts to revamp the By-Laws and our purpose statement...please advise one way or the other...

Does anyone have any experience with incorporating a PTO in the US for a school that is overseas? We are US military and the private school our daughter goes to has mostly American students -- we'd like to incorporate the PTO for the many benefits it would offer us -- anyone have any tips/advice/experience with this? Appreciate your time and suggestions. Susan

Renee,
Our school is considering doing the same; moving from a PTA to a PTO. Could I email you as well?
Thanks for your time....Melissa
