the fact that it is anon registered organization should not matter, they have bylaws , are suppose to be a parent group and it seems clear that they are not sticking to the bylaws. I would push it more, maybe it is time to start a new group, let others get involved!
Thanks for replying everyone. I agree, the attitude of it stinks! What they're really saying is 'we don't trust you to make any decisions', at least that's how I feel. I've checked into it further and it appears to me that someone somewhere along the line decided to create a 'club' and call it a PTO as a way to get money from people but not register with the state as a non profit organization. I've requested the by-laws and was promised I'd receive them, but what good are by-laws for a non-registered organization? Besides, I was told half the laws are "missing". Hmmmm.....
In order for the fee to have been included in the tuition payment, someone at the highest level of the school approved it. I would schedule a meeting with the principal.
I would ask lots of questions, what is the money used for, why are the meetings really closed, why the "clique"? Beware the red flags are standing tall.
Seems like there is a issue here for sure, did the request for the "fee" say for the PTL? Is it in replace of fundraising or dues for the PTL? I would get a copy of the bylaws if you can and see what it says about membership. Seems to me since parents have paid this then they are infact members of the PTL. Having closed board meetings are done alot of places but there are general meetings that all are welcome to attend. Does your school have general meetings at all? If not i would push the issue...what did you pay for??
