how to leave a seat as an officer

I've been involved with our PTO for 5 years and on the board for 3 years. This past spring I resigned because I have decided to join other committees as well, though I am still involved and go to all the meetings.

There are many ways that you can stay involved in your childs school. You could volunteer in class, help the teachers, volunteer to teach after school programs if you have a talent.

If you have a community service department, or recreation department in your town, you could coach, or get involved and volunteer to teach something.

How about the library, our librarian is always looking for good people to help.

I guess what I am trying to say is, sometimes it's just time to say, "I'm above all this and I need to move on". Maybe in a year or two, when things have settled down, reinvest your time in the PTO. I would wait until they get organized first before I would go back.

I am not saying to stand by and do nothing, but it sounds like your principal has had enough, and rightfully so. It is his/her school, and she has to manage it on a daily basis, parents, teachers, students. It's not easy when there is conflict. Been there done that!

My 2 cents: Bow out gracefully.

I am talking to the school the right way. There are 3 of who want to resign the right way, but for some reason. The sec. is causing problems at the school. She had our Pres. and Vice pres. Put out 3 years ago. She is in it for the glory of herself. I have been there for teachers and kids. I want to PTO to go on, and I just do not know how to do this. I do not whine. There are plenty of things for me to do in my life, but while my child is in this school I want to be there for the teachers. A happy teacher is happy kids. I just need to know the best way to go on...

Maybe the school is trying to help by finding out who is interested . Then an election can be held. Seems to me there is a SEVERE COMUNICATION PROBLEM here.

Please do not take this the wrong way but constantly saying you "want out" sounds (to me) sort of whiney. Hopefully, you are not coming across this way to the school and only on this discussion forum. Maybe you should just resign if you feel you cannot get along with your other board member. As in any job, sometimes you may not care for a co worker, but you are there to do the job and do not have to be best buds with your co workers. We don't all see eye to eye in this world. As adults we should be able to get along. But if you see that it is an impossible situation and can not work it out, resignation might be best.

The problem with the school sending out letters is: They are part of the PTO, but are now trying to run the election, and telling that we can not hold a meeting because we want out. The princaple needs to let us do what we do best. Give money when needed. Iam just a the breaking point.
I do not think anyone would sue we as a PTO have no insurance, and with the problem person in it could happen. Other things in the past could cause it.

There needs to be an honest discussion between the three parents (board) and the school. Bring a copy of Roberts Rules of Order (libraries carry it if you don't want to purchase one) so that procedures can be spelled out. Also so know one blames anyone for making up rules. It sounds like to me expectations, goals, etc. need to seriously be discussed to keep this going and for the school to take your work done seriously.

but now the school is sending out letters saying they want to know who is willing to be on the board. I have told them they are doing it wrong and law suites can be filled

WHy can't the school send home a letter? Just wondering. And why would a parent sue....

Is it communication a kicker!

I am the Treasurer of the PTO. I have been in office 2 years. I just want out. The school is now saying they can and will do away with the PTO if this goes on. THe thing is I do not really want to see that happen. I want to hold elections, but now the school is sending out letters saying they want to know who is willing to be on the board. I have told them they are doing it wrong and law suites can be filled. They do not get it.
