OFFICER TERM LIMITS for 3 YEAR SCHOOL

OOOOOOO.....I like that idea! With around 18 to 20 more years of school for me (my youngest just turned one) I won't be on the board FOREVER [img]smile.gif[/img]

We actually just changed our bylaws last year from 1 year terms to 2 years terms with a limit of 2 terms (4 years) in a particular position. We only have 4 officers and stagger the elections so it is not an entirely new board each year. (President &secretary are elected on even years and VP and treasurer on odd years.)

One thing you may need to consider is the advantage of having an experienced officer in place. In other discussions, many of us who served as president for multiple years have commented how much time and effort it takes to learn the ropes that first year. The second year can be so much easier/more productive because one has the processes and personalities figured out and can focus on programs.

However you decide to go, think hard before you lock yourself in. Circumstances can change. What if the VP moves or decides not to continue?

In our PTO, officers all serve one year terms but can be re-elected for a second year. And, we have the ability (with 2/3 vote of approval) to re-elect an officer beyond two years. Our bylaws also state that the President "should" have previously served on the Board for at least a year. "Should" shows the intent but doesn't lock you in.

well i think it is great that you have enough interested people to hold officer positions. i currently am serving my second year as president because no one else wanted the job. the other situations i can see there might be a problem is if a vp does not want to go on to be pres. or the organization does not want them to be pres after viewing as a vp. or you've a particularly great pres. so you might want to have some kind of clause to rectify these types of situations or at least give you some leeway.

I'm NOT trying to be a pain but I'm not sure how you define "consecutively" . What I mean is, if I were a parent at your school I would be there for the next ten or so years as I have four children that are two years apart in age so like this year I have a first grader and a kindergarder. When the Kindergarder is in second grade I will have another starting school, you get the hint. SO if I ran for office and served as....secretary....I can serve for two years and then I'm done "forever" or I serve for two years and a year goes by and I'm nominated again can I accept the nomination or decline because I have already servered as Secretary and my term limits.

I really need to get away from my kids, I'm starting to argue like them! Seriously I would think about that senario. It could happen!
