We have a 2 year term limit and I wouldn't want to change it to 1 year or to automatically have the VP actually be the president-elect. Living in a highly transient community...this wouldn't work for us. As someone said before, the second year is actually smoother because you've worked out the kinks during the first year. And not everyone wants to do a second year. We had one president last only 6 months. :eek: If you are worried that everyone won't have a chance to be the president if they want to, your school must be much different than mine. We usually have several people who are willing to be the VP, but no one wanting to be the head...how do you think I got the job??? :cool:
We have term limits of two years. We also have a provision where we can suspend any item of our bylaws for a specific reason and time. This suspension requires 2/3 vote of the organization to pass. We had to invoke this on our last election. I was re-elected VP for my third year (which I'm thrilled to serve) because the organization wanted to maintain the same officers (the Pres, Sec and Tres are on their second term).

The 18-20 years thing is really honestly a light hearted joke....I enjoy being involved and knowing what is going on with my children's school. Sometimes I feel I know too much but I have that established commitment to the school that works too.
18-20 years, not a sentence but a fun way to look at how long I have to complete a project. HA
I think you need to take it all in and see what works for you. I think mykidsmom makes sense in that 1 students 3 year stay at school doesn't mean that is all you are going to see of 1 parent. I'm not sure if she's angry she has 18-20yrs of being a school mom (I won't have to be on the board forever) or if she wants to be involved because it gives her a chance to speak with adults (I really need to get away from my kids). Mix signals there. But don't we all feel that way sometimes. Especially now at the end of summer.
You need to consider the momentum built up by having a president two years in a row. You may also consider that the vp is not necessarally the only other choice. Any member of the exec. board would probably have a pretty good idea of how things are run. Maybe even a loyal committee chair or volunteer. Perhaps a type of mentoring program.
I've seen president emeritus (past pres) on the board in a advisory capacity.
We (K-5)have 5 board members that can only serve two years in any position and then after one year off can take that position back. They can also be elected into a new position following the last. ex. vp 2 years next pres 2 years While we love our jobs, we hope to empower others to step up and share their new ideas to benefit all the students. We keep really good records and the newly elected and outgoing have a few months to work together before the change over.
Hi...our NEW bylaws state that the same person can not hold the same office for more than two consective years. this past year I openly announced that I no longer wanted the president title, guess what...they elected me anyways. No one else wants it or evens wants to consider doing it. At this time I am okay with it since my youngest is entering school next month but I wonder what will happen when i walk away and refuse the job. Our PTA disbanded because of lack of involvement and the same four parents ran it for four years.We have a long list of volunteers who are great at working events, fundraising, etc but no one wants the head job!! So my believe if that if you feel confident in that alot of parents are going to want to be officer then do the limit, from what im reading most schools can't find enough to step up!! I do agree that my second year(last) I learned so much and will be much effective this year, experience does help alot!!! Then you have to start somewhere too, the principal handed me anotebook with about ten pieces of paper in it, no bylaws, not much of anything, that's how i started!!
