Can officer(s) be removed from their position by the public?

mozart you had very valid concerns and I am sorry that proud mom felt to attack your group. Without knowing your whole story I am totally unsure why she feels that you are a mom who isn't getting your own way. I have been through this type of thing to the point, bottom line is every parent has that right to volunteer, when any group decides upon themselves that they need to get rid of a parent that opens a huge door for lawsuits, discrimination, etc. If the problem continues I would document any issues when they arrise, take them to your district, yes it is a pto issue BUT your district should have into place a volunteer/visitor code of conduct. We are actually amending our bylaws to state that volunteers must follow the districts code of conduct, just for future issues. Hang in there, document and leave it to the voters!

I was just simply inquiring to whether or not there was an option. I've been reading the rule book over the weekend and agree with Serendipity and WFS, thank you for your supportive answers. It seems that the bylaws can be rather loose at times. (Depends upon the writers). I do find it a shame that any organization would have to write about what appropriate conduct is in their bylaws. One would think that it would be common sense on how to behave. I have served on other boards, and have never seen anyone behave as now. PTO is a public organization with has a duty to the public sector, i.e., students, teachers, parents, businesses (especially if they provide services, products or money) and the public (they buy those wonderful fundraisers) ;-).

I didn't mean to illicit a personal attack from proudmom. You obviously have personal issues from an experience in this area, I am sorry for striking a nerve. And just to set the record straight I am not running for a position. The unprofessional side that I'm speaking of is this (which needs corrected and is not a reason for dismissal): I have attended a few meetings, have been made to feel very unwelcome at the PTO meetings, and have seen ideas rejected and scoffed at (how professional is that? You should always patronize and welcome ideas - doesn't mean you have to accept them or make the person feel like a fool). Do you think an officer should behave in such a manner? After all who are they? They're just another parent with an idea. Right? I believe that such a group should look at themselves and have a desire to run as a professional organization after all they are representatives of the school and yes, their CHILDREN as well. And about wasting time? This is an open forum and if no one responded that would have been fine with me. And, if you thought it was wasting time, why did you take your time? :confused:

As for babies2, the Wellness policy should be a wonderful thing. However, our state has made it a muddle. The policy has been written with loop holes. We have some school that are so strict they enforce it upon their teachers and what they can bring in to eat for lunch (which is extreme, after all they are responsible adults, right? LOL) and then some have parties like its Halloween (which is ridiculous!). Can you believe that??? I don't know your exact laws but could the PTOs get together in large maybe by county, district, etc. (depends upon how your set up), come up with a good plan (acceptable treats & quantity and which holiday/party) and then take your ideas to the local reps office? I know it would be a huge undertaking but just an idea. Hope things can work out.

In closing to all, I realize there are more important issues to deal with. We ALL juggle the affairs in our lives. I thank you for your time in answering my original post. And, I hope and pray that together as concerned parents we could unite and do what's best for all children. I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer for the Junior Achievement organization this year and if you not acquainted with it please check out the site. If you would like to ask me any questions please feel free to do so, I’ll answer if I can. It was through my position in the schools that I realized that these were all my children not just my own. And, if I wanted to see improvement in areas then its up to me to be active participate in the school and PTO. So for all of you, who are there with me, THANK YOU and keep up the good work!:D

It must be said that this mother needs to QUIT! No one has been unethical! No one has been unfair! This is simply a matter of a couple of moms throwing a fit because they are not getting their way! Grow up! Quit bothering these moms on this site that have REAL issues they would like to address. What are you so afraid of any way? Your name is still on the ballot? What is the problem? If for some reason you do not get in this year there are plenty of more years to come! You are just ruining your own reputation by doing this! Do you think after all you are doing that some one will actually want you to be any type of leader for this school? You are not setting a very good example for your children!

You can't stop them from being nominated and being put on the ballot. You may find others willing to run against them. If this officer is as unethical as you say then is your principal aware of it. The PTO is a reflection on your school and district, seems if things are not quite right that he would want to know.

fight their re-election? dont think its possible. but you can nominate and vote in someone else next time elections come around, isnt that how parent groups normally operate?
if your bylaws have a cluase, you can remove an officer if you follow the procdurues.

easier to just vote in the best candidate next time around, since shcool yr is almost over.

(babies2, your moms are barking up the wrong tree,,,,they need to talk to the school board, it is they that set the policy acccording to how they interpreted the new food law.)

Why do you want the officers out? Is it because you are not getting your way? Also, is it because of a school policy of which the PTO has no dealings in? A Wellness policy for example is a state mandated policy by which all schools must abide or loose their free and reduced lunch program. For example, a group of moms at our school are trying to fight the PTO on the wellness policy because they want to bring treats into school. Some moms have even tried to smuggle treats into the school. Can you believe that? Any way if it is pertinent to the PTO and a well founded reason not just a perceived injustice, then the voters will respond.
