Glad to hear your event was a success. Our annual art show is very simple. We do not have refreshments or a local artist, although I think both of those are excellent ideas. I think I will suggest both of those for this year's show.
The parents can "buy" their child's art for $1. The child gets a "sold" sticker to place near the artwork. Of course, the artwork goes home (later) regardless of if the parent "buys' it. We have just over 700 students, and about 90% are "bought." We don't do anything fancy. Colored butcher paper on the walls of the MPR to separate classrooms, each art piece is put over a construction paper "frame." We also have some freestanding accordian style panels that a parent made years back that we place in the middle of the MPR to create more display space.
We had thought about having the art work for sale and may try that if we attempt this event in the future.

another thing that we might do is have people bring a can of food for an admittance price and turn it into a community give back type of deal. I wish I would have thought of that earlier...I like the idea of doing something to benefit something besides our Booster Club.
We could have had 300 cans of food to give to our local food bank. That would have been pretty incredible!

Jennifer- like the variation of having people bid on the art work but not pay to attend the event... then it's a community event everyone can enjoy but if people have the money and want to buy the artwork, the school can raise some money.
A note for future Art Walks. I have been to schools where parents were allowed to 'bid' or purchase the art work and in that way incorporated making money but not requiring an entrance fee or anything. It sounds like a great event.
Just popping in really quick to say that our Art Show was a HUGE success.
We have 350 students in our school and we had 300 attendees (approx. 100 families) show up for it! I honestly had no idea what to expect, but I think we were all overwhelmed by the outpouring of kids and teachers and family members. There were generations of families showing up ranging from tiny newborns to grandmas and even some great grandparents.
I think keeping the event FREE was a huge deal. We have a lot of low income families who are really struggling right now and for them to be able to just walk in through those doors and enjoy themselves, well we had some people stay for the whole hour and a half that the show was open.
I will post some more details when I have some time.
