Sounds like some great ideas! The only thing I can think of is maybe adding some kind of class reward like a popcorn party or cookie party. The kids will be proud of putting books in the library, but that direct reward might motivate them even more.
So, I had a bright idea. I have not presented it to my group yet~wanted to run it by you all first.
National Literacy Month is September, so we missed the boat on that one. But, Dr.Suess's birthday is in March~I think it is the 2nd. Anyway, I'm wanting to do a literacy month at our school. I had some ideas of my own, and "borrowed" a few from things I read here. It would start w/a big birthday party for Dr.Suess. This would also start the challenges. Each class would have a literacy chain-paper link chains (like the one's we used to make in school around the holidays) that students fill out for each book they read throughout the month. We are a pre-k through 8 school w/class sizes ranging from 12-23, so I'm still trying to think of some sort of reward for this challenge. Maybe having each class set a reasonable goal & for every class that meets their goal, donating $X to buy books for the library for that age level of reading. While at the dollar store, I found bookmarks that say "Books I Have Read" with spaces for book titles. I purchased enough for the entire school. My idea was that when a student had read enough books to fill up the bookmark, they would get some sort of voucher good for books at a book fair. I would also like to have an author visit & workshop-there are a couple of really great children's authors in our area. We would, of course, do a Family Reading Night. I had also thought of having a "Black Out" week, asking families to turn off tv, comps, & video games to instead, read. Maybe a Read-a-Thon, raising $ for new books for the library. I would also like to coordinate w/teachers to incorporate the theme into their lesson plans.
Sorry~I know this is long. I had this brainstorm a few months ago & just wanted to get some feedback before I present to my group. Anyone ever done something similar? Any thoughts?
