At our Fall Festival last year we offered hot dogs, wraps, chips, cut apples, various drinks....and we offered side salads to give people choices....we only sold 5 salads, gave some away but had to throw many out.....

P.S. Many of you active in this Forum are now elementary school parents (because they tend to have the most active parent groups). In a few years when your kids are in middle/high school - who do suppose they are going to recruit to help with those concession stands? YOU!

So even if your district doesn't have "rules" going into effect - you can still have an impact.

Thanks for the responses so far. I realize many of you don't work with the concessions stands. But that's just one area.

More relevant to you - when the PTO/PTA is planning events where refreshments are served(Carnival, Spring Fling, Dances) - do you consider this? (Regardless of school rules.)

As I meant to indicate - this was a common part of our discussions long before the new rule. Someone on the committee would always ask if we couldn't include bags of grapes or fruit or pretzels along with the other stuff. We still had pizza or popcorn or whatever, but adding one or two alternatives was a typical part of our planning.

I'm looking for feedback on 1) if your group does this and 2) ideas to share.

My fellow gym partner went to the high school football game tuesday and was disappointed to see that the only choices were a hotdog, a hamburger or a fried chicken sandwich, chips, fries, candy and soda. What she really wanted was a grilled chicken sandwich and a bottle of water.

I think you're on the right track to offer healthier choices along with the traditional favorites. I hope our local schools follow your lead and do the same!
