We have had a sock hop the past few years. We hire a local 50's band (they give us a really good affordable deal) and we do it on a Saturday.

We found that doing it in the winter months turned out the best. We do ours in Feb. We did one in April once but hardly anyone showed, it was getting nice out and the days longer.

Volunteers help decorate the day before, we provide refreshments free of charge. There was a small admission fee, maybe $5 for the whole family. People were encouraged to dress up, while the band was taking a break we held a hulahoop contest. Winners were given "retro" boxes of candy, (juju's, good n plenty's etc).

We did one a few years back and it was a hit. Each year we do a different theme, you would be surprised that with a good dj the kids will be content dancing all night. You could do make your own ice cream sundaes, hand jive contests, twist contest, 50's dress up contest, things like that. We actually had the school day be 50"s day so that everyone could dress 50 style, some teachers used it to teach 50 history. Have fun with it, we did all of our deco in pink, black and teal it was so cool!

We are thinking about having a sock hop this year and have tossed around ideas of having a hoola hoop contest, limbo, best outfit contest, bubble gum bubble blowing contest. You could google "sock hop" and get some ideas that way too. Have fun!

hello!I read your post, and you know this is my 2nd year. This year we are getting ready for a family night out, and one of the features is a dance. But with this dance the parent has to dance with the student. I believe it will make it more fun because they have to dance to the music their parents grew up with. I hope this helps.

Hey, i am new to PTO and I am loving be the chair person for our family fun events. We have a preliminary soc hop on our shcedule. Knowing that these are young kids, the music and danceing may not keep their attention. Has anyone ever done one of these? Anyone have ideas for more activities we could do to keep the attention of the kids?
