So how would a silent auction be set up?
OUR SILENT AUCTION ITEMS ARE SET UP ON LOTS OF LONG TABLES (WITH TABLECLOTHS ON THEM)

Items at different tables?
THERE ARE DOZENS OF ITEMS, EACH WITH A BID SHEET (WHICH HAS EITHER 2 OR 3 COPIES TO IT, CAN'T REMEMBER)
If you come back to the item you want and someone has outbid you, you can bid again?
OH YES, ABSOLUTELY. THAT'S PART OF THE FUN!

It sounds like fun, I just wish I knew alll the ins and outs.

Edit: JTina -- hope you'll share here. Your insight will be archived that way and will help parent leaders for months and years to come.

Our auction is always done using a live auctioneer. We get a local auctioneer to volunteer his services, he grew up here and has kids in school. This can be very exciting if you get a couple people who really want the same item and the price goes sky high!

I have also been to a silent auction where they had a sheet for each item. You put down your name and bid, then you had to kind of keep watch to see if someone bid over you. This lasted about an hour, during cocktails. Then during dinner the sheets were gathered, and the winners were announced during dessert.

Terms I have never heard and so on. Can you please break down the different types of auctions and how they are supposed to be run? I am a Parent Volunteer/PTO member(we haven't had our first meeting yet) and I am interested in finding out more about these and other events to raise money/ bring families together. Our Parent Coordinator will be leaving soon as she is moving out of state and has tagged me as her replacement. She also had another parent volunteer who was all gongho for creating a PTO (there hasn't been one in about 4 years or longer) but so far has not committed to setting up the meetings/letters etc. So I am kind of worried that If I stay on as the new PC, I will have to get this thing off the floor however I can. The other parent has only signed up about 3 parents and through a general meeting of moms, we ended up having about 12 new recruits (myself included) but I am a member of the middle school (it's two schools in one) and my children are in the elementary section, so I am hoping tht we will be able to combine/add the elementary to the PTO that is underway.
So if anyone can break down the auction procedures and how many types there are, I will appreciate it very much. Thanks a lot.
