Fees for Family Events - Hard to Swallow

18 years 9 months ago #119712 by ScottMom#1
We have always paid our custodian for working Saturday for our carnival-usually the whole day. We couldn't do it without him no matter how we looked at it. For the rest of our family events, we have a custodian in the building until late at night and we usually do not ask for his assistance accept to put extra trash bins in the area we will be using. We do the cleanup.
We do not pay our custodian through a union. We consider him doing a contracted service for the PTO that day. He is paid a predetermined amount for the day, I believe last year he worked 9 to 4 and was paid $125 plus breakfast and lunch.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

We've never had to pay for our custodians since they were working anyway. We just had to be out by 9pm or then we'd pay. We've never used the school on weekends or holidays so that was never an issue for us. The only one we had to pay was our school cook since she came in on her own time & it was one night a year we'd need her. She only charged us $100.00. Good luck.

Our district has receintly imposed fees for the PTO to hold an event at the school. $38 per hour (during the week) with a 3 hour minimum. We get charged from 1/2 hour before event to 1/2 hour after. These fees go up to $48/hour on weekend and $72/hour on a holiday. This apparently is due to custodial union contracts. We have never been charged in previous years and have recently just begun getting parents to attend events with their children. We planned a great calendar this year but if we keep it as planned we will pay over $3,000 in fees. This just does not seem right to me. Does everyone pay fees? Is this just our District????
