Dance?

Candlemum...As long as you have the principals approval and there are chaperones...Why wouldn't you be able to do it? We have functions all the time. Parents are not required to attend, you just need a certain number of volunteers there and when we send home a flyer for the event at the bottom it asks if they will be willing to help out and stay that night. The way the question was posed makes it sound as if the parent thinks it is against the law to hold a dance in an elementary school. It is just odd.

Ty's Mom.....Wow...teachers demanding a dance be canceled because the don't want to attend! Whose best interest is that in? I would never cancel the dance. By law (at least here in NJ) teachers are only required to attend or do what is in their contracts. Our teachers are never required to attend any night time or extra activities. They are always welcome, but not required to attend. As I said I certainly would not cancel the dance as it is a selfish request on their part and not in the best interest of the children. I would tell them that while you understand their position that the dance is being held for the children. And they are welcome to attend if they like. If they are mad at you so be it....Because their anger is self serving!

I'm not sure why teachers wouldn't want the children to be rewarded unless they are supposed to be there. We considered doing an end of the year dance but no one wants to stay to do it and considering how crazy my kids are the last week of school, I don't blame them. I guess that's the difference between the parents and the teachers, we do it because we want our children to have every advantage and they do it because they want the benefits of the parents' hard work and asking them to stay past 3 on the the last day might be too much.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

We currently have this problem with the teachers not the parents. We are hosting a goodbye dance for our second graders at the end of the year b/c they will be in another school. It is family oriented and parents have to be present. We have gotten principals and superintendent's approval. Now teachers (none of whom ever attend a meeting) are writing letters to the PTO demanding that it be cancelled. We have been planning this since the beginning of the school year. I have told them they are welcome to come to the meeting and voice their concers but refuse. I don't want to cancel but I'm not sure it's worth all the bad feelings.

As long as you have your Principal's approval, I wouldn't think there would be a problem. We used to have dances at the elementary school but they were for families. Our middle school has student dances but they are chaparoned by the staff. Was the parent just questioning if it was ok or were they complaining about it?

Our PTO has recently had 2 dances? I was asked by a parent are they allowed to do that? Host a dance in a public elentary school? Parents not required to be there! They were both OK, I think? I did not go! I was at other meetings at the time. Just trying to find out if there are any rules about this kind of function!

Thanking you inadvance for your help!
