Family Arts and Crafts Workshop

Anything done with the kids handprints is a sure hit with parents. I have also done a project with kids making a heart shaped door hanger. You use floral wire(about 18" long), red and white round wood beads, white wood cubes(I think they were 1/2") that have a hole in them, black sharpies or black alphabet stamps(letters L,O,V, and E), and some 1/2' wide by 6" long strips of fabric in valentine colors.

Take one end of the wire and wrap it three times around a pencil. Stamp or write the letters for LOVE on all four sides of the cubes(one with 4-Ls, etc.). Feed three or four beads on, alternating colors(the curly-q you made will hold them on), then put on the letter cubes, L first and with a bead between each, then keep filling in with the beads until you have about 2" of wire left. Bend the wire in the middle to make the point of your heart, then bring the straight end over and wrap around the base of the curly-q a couple of times. Shape your heart's top curves by pushing the joined ends down to middle. Tie a piece of fabric over the twisted wire ends. You may need to experiment a little. I did this a few years ago so my bad memory combined with trying to explain in writing something I can do in a heartbeat with my hands is difficult.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Anyone have suggestions of projects that are good for a Family Arts and Crafts Workshop? It will last about 2 hours and will be have parents and kids working jointly or separately on a project of their choice. We are a PreK-6 school, so I need ideas for various age groups. The event is free to the families, the PTA is paying for everything, so it can’t be a project that will require a hefty outlay for supplies. Since the workshop is on January 28th and Valentine Day’s is about 2 weeks later, we think gearing the projects toward the Valentine Day theme is good.

I think fabric covered 5x7 picture frames, using fabric scraps, cardboard and glue is a good project for that night. Any other suggestions?
