I think especially if you have a small school, why wouldn't you want to thank the support staff? Don't they help make the teachers and students a sucess? What if we didn't have a librarian, tech staff, kitchen help or maybe a custodian? We are thankful for everyone who touches are childerns lives!

Librarians ARE teachers. Here in TX, it's the standard. I taught English and French for 4 years before I completed my Masters in Library and Information Studies and became a school librarian. I know some small districts can't afford a "real" or degreed librarian and may have that spot filled with an aide. If that's the case, then I'm sure they have their week or day during "Secretaries" appreciation.

Please do not diminish the role of the librarian. We are teachers with a lot more training than many classroom teachers. :)

I thought it was Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.

We celebrate all teachers and staff at our school. Today we had a Hollywood Stars theme. We put a red carpet on the floor that everyone walked on as soon as they came into the lounge, and we sprinkled gold stars all over it. We had flowers delivered to the school in our vases purchased from Positive Promotions that read, Thanks for Helping Students Bloom. We had black, gold, and silver balloons in the lounge, and white tablecloths on the tables sprinkled with gold stars. We had soup and a salad bar, fruit salad, and great desserts. The teachers and staff loved it! They were all afraid of walking on the red carpet because it looked so pretty. We also took pictures as some teachers and staff members strutted down the red carpet. We have no idea how we are going to top this idea next year!

"Well I gave in and delivered the librarian her goodie bags. I have bigger battles to fight"

ABSOLUTELY what I was thinking. I know we all worry about precendents and such and for some things it is necessary--but one sour mood or person can really put things into a bad place. NOT WORTH IT in my mind. You plan for next year is good...just recognize everyone at some point and no one can fuss....

Well I gave in and delivered the librarian her goodie bags. I have bigger battles to fight, I just know next year we will have a list of "teachers" at the meeting and those names will be approved at the meeting...

Vrey tough. I agree with you though, if you change the precedent you must change it for all.

The only gray area is whether or not the Librarian can be considered a teach. At our school she does take the classes into the Library, reads to them, helps them select appropriate books, sets the accelerated reading program levels, the online quizes, etc. I consider her, as I do the art teacher, the music teacher, the gym teacher and the computer teacher; a teacher.

So IMO I would say that special teachers, such as the Librarian, should count towards this week.

The hard area comes when looking at aides, social workers, etc.

Good luck,
PresidentJim
