Lice-what is your schools policy?

16 years 4 months ago #141294 by Debbieomi
Our district policy is that the child has to go home. The child stays in the office until the parents come. Actually, there is a table and chairs set up just outside the glass walled office. The kid(s) sit there. If the child has siblings in the building, they are called to the office and checked also. We do not do head checks. These kids are sent by teachers, etc who think there may be something.
The student must be lice and nit free before returning. There is also a policy in place for referrals to CPS if a child has lice Z number of times in a certain period of time. Our counselor works with families in regards to the shampoo, prevention, laundering, etc. We get some funding from our county's health department.

I believe our policy is to send the child home from school and they can return to school after having been treated with the shampoo. I used to work for Head Start and their policy was the same and to send a note home with the other children as well asking each parent to check their children.

Ours just changed recently and I believe that the child can stay in school that day, but must get it taken care of that evening at home. They will then recheck the next day and if not taken care of then the child must go home and get it resolved. The other children are not notified now, which was really strange to me, but they always seem to change things.

We have the same policy in our school. We do receive a note home saying someone has it and we are to watch for it. I believe our nurse checks and rechecks to make sure!!!

Our policy is that you can come to school with the nits in your hair, just no live ones. We on our board think that this is unacceptable. But it is a district wide policy and we are looking to change it.
Does anyone have any policys that we can compare ours to?

I think that's our policy. Does your school do frequent checks? Ours checks after every break. I know they keep lice shampoo in the office for any families that might need it. We've never gotten involved but I know some school's PTO/PTA groups have purchased kits for the school.

I beleive each state has a regulation with regard to lice in schools. Check there first to ensure your district is following the regulation. Have a conversation with your family doctor about lice or search WebMD. If a informational flyer has not been sent home to each parent do so with the schools blessing. Education about the life span will help but remember you can lead the horse to water but can not make them drink. Anotherwords if your school is following regulations, informed parents of the problem and taken steps to educate the parents about the problem the problem may not be the school. Be careful about stepping into district policy; it can be unhealthy it not done well/carefully.
