PTO to PTA

Start your new PTO & begin writing up your bylaws rather than wait for the outgoing persons to do it for you.

You can obtain your Tax ID anytime. You don't need bylaws for that. However, to file for Tax Exemption, you will need everything in order.

The year is approaching fast, so you need to start soon!

Hey Nancy! Congratulations on being elected president It's stressful but rewarding. I hope you enjoy it!

My understanding from other discussions here on these message boards is that you can go full steam ahead with your PTO. You are completely separate from the former PTA at your school. Elect officers, draft bylaws, write a budget, plan fund raisers and activities.

Does your PTO plan to operate as a service branch of the school or file for independent 501(c)(3) status? That decision will affect many of your other decisions moving forward.

As for the PTA, again just my understanding, they just sort of fizzle out. The paperwork you mention being undone, is that PTA paperwork to disband the group? If so, I say leave that to the former PTA board. Of course, help out if you can because it isn't a 'you vs them' sort of thing. Otherwise, focus on your new group and what you can do to be successful for your students and teachers.

Here's the problem.

Last June we voted to stop going the PTA route and start a PTO. The vote was went through with flying color.

This is the first time I held an officership with the PTO/PTA and I was elected as President for the 07/08 school year.
Well here it is end of August and we have not completed the paper work yet. I am it has to be handled by last years Pres. and Treas.
What do we do? Can we continue as a PTO we have our on PTO tax ID#. Do we have to completely get rid of the PTA first? When you call the PTA they try to scare you into not quiting the PTA.
So what does a school who is struggling as a PTA, needs to make a change with new officers and fresh ideas to do?

Thanks Nancy
