Changing PTO rules 2 weeks before the election

17 years 2 months ago #131080 by my3strongtikes
Do they have any bylaws supporting this? I would go from there.

We used to have a certain amount of meetings in our bylaws but we changed this in our new bylaws. For the reason being that if you were an incoming kdg parent there would be no way you could have been to meetings and we didnt want to exclude them from our PTO.

I would ask why you werent notified of the rule beforehand and where it states that in your bylaws.

Good Luck

I'm sure hoping you folks can help me out here. I'm a newbie to P.T.O. (oldest in kindergarten) and am extremely angered. I've learned that, in the past, the board ran unopposed. This year, several of us kindergarten moms have decided to run. Initially, the Pres and V.P. wanted to meet with myself and another mom so "we can decide who will run for what position." My friend and I refused to meet as this seemed very shady to us. Ballots were sent home and there were no restrictions placed on who could run for office. I asked if teachers could vote and was told they would "check the by- laws." I received an e mail from the Pres. today stating that only those people who attended 5 meetings could run for office and you had to attend 3 meetings to vote. This was NOT discussed at a meeting, rather a closed door meeting involving the executive P.T.O. Board. We learned today that (19) individuals met (presumably members from the P.T.O. boards from all schools in our district) and THEY decided to vote to change the voting rules. I said this seems very unfair to me and that all parents should have a right to vote. And, being a PTO board, teachers should have a say too.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
