Black Hist. Month Ideas

Well, you don't know where you're going until you know where you've came from. Many African-American children don't have a sense of identity and they don't feel as if they can do/be anything without limitations, especially when all they see around them is poverty. We are hoping that this exhibit, along with pre and post activities, will help them in establishing that identity and help them to gain a self-esteem boost.

King Tutankhamun was an Egyptian King and is one of the most popular Egyptian pharaohs in the modern world. He became king at at the tender age of nine and was head of the state, church, and military. In addition, when his tomb was excavated, many of the archeaologists died and rumors of a curse surfaced.

The exhibit will be bringing close to 130 pieces of Egyptian antiquities, many outside of Egypt for the first time. Some of these include a child-sized throne, his royal crown and also artifacts from the five other Pharaohs tombs, which ruled during the “Golden Age”. All of the antiquities within the exhibit date back more than 3,500 years.

The Franklin Institute will be carrying this exhibit until September and Philadelphia will be the final stop on the current US tour. Media reports have said it will be another fifty years before it will be on circuit again so it is truly a once in a lifetime experience. This is why we are taking our kids to see the exhibit and why we are incorporating it into Black History Month. Hope this helps.

King Tut was an african king. Despite a common practice throughtout history to homogonize important leaders, he was black. Yeah, Egyptian, but Egypt is in Africa.

There are a lot of crazy theories on the web, incuding a blog from someone who believes he has been reincarnated and once lived in ancient Egypt. There are also plenty of credible sources, including the National Geographic Society.

I suppose there are plenty of people who wonder why it's necessary to prove such things and if it really matters. From a female perspective, I sure would appreciate more proof that women were a lot more influential in the civilization of man than they have ever gotten credit for. I imagine it's a matter of being proud of who or what you are and expecting history to give credit where credit is due.

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same."

I am not sure about your finances and all, but take a look at Prismatic Magic and their Black History Laser Show. We are having our shows tommorrow and we cannot wait. They provide Black History materials for the teachers as well. The show consists of lasers choreographed to the sounds of Motown and other music. The show costs $645. Check it out at www.prismaticmagic.com

That sounds like a pretty full agenda. We aren't even doing half of what you have planned. Way to go!

I'm looking to put together a few events for Black History Month. So far we are looking to go to the Franklin Institute in Phialdelphia, PA to see the King Tut exhibit, have some storytelling, a dress-up day, step show, poetry contest and a jazz/gospel music concert. Any more ideas? Or is that enough?
