Does anyone have any background/information on running a talent show for elementary grade children?
Did you limit the act time, did you include all acts/ audition?
Lots of questions and I am looking for help.

I started a Talent Show from scratch at our school--about 2 years ago (we are K-8). I did tons of internet research and it turned out well.

YES, you must limit the time of the act--our limit was 3 minutes.
YES, we included all the acts. BUT, the first year we had so many kids want to participate that we broke it down into a "Jr. Talent Show" for the younger grades (1st-3rd, I think) and it started at 5:00 p.m. The regular "Talent Show" started at 7:00, I think. It was nice because the little ones could be done earlier. we had about a 30 minute break between the two. We did not do this the second year because we didn't have quite so many acts.

The kids paid an entry fee ($10, I think) and they had to "audition" and submit all lyrics in writing with their audition (to prevent nasty songs). The music teacher screened the auditions, just to let them know if their act was too long or how it needed help. The music teacher found "real" judges who awarded trophies in age groups. They also had many, many "extra" awards like "most creative"; "best hair"; "funniest" and silly things like that so lots of awards were given.

It was a great night and everyone had such fun. We charged $5 to get in.

I recommend a professional sound system for the night, if you can swing it. We had to pay a guy to come do it , but it was worth it. This was not a fundraiser.

Another bit of advice--do you have a student council? It's nice to get them involved. Also, our teachers put on a skit and the kids LOVED it. The principal made them do it!

It's nice if you can swing some little something for each child. The first year we gave each child a t-shirt and a tiny trophy and they were beaming.

I would love to do a talent show at our elementary school. I organized one for a high school and we held auditions. Not many people auditioned so everyone that did was in the show. You do have to set a time limit on each act. We had several singers and dancers and a fashion show. We had tickets printed up for free in the school's print shop. We made over $2,000. They are a lot of work, but it is fun to see how everything is put together on the day of the show. Good luck!
