I'm not sure if when you say "adopted" you mean through the Adopt a Classroom program or not. This is a fabulous program which allows businesses or individual groups to come together, raise 500 dollars and "adopt" a classroom in a school that is registered (all our counties schools are. The 500 dollars is then earmarked for the teacher of the classroom to spend via authorized online catalogues. The adopter receives notification of what is purchased to allow you to maintain accountability. My PTO adopted 5 classrooms in LA and MO after Katrina. There is more information at adoptaclassroom.com. If you have events to raise money, you can use it to adopt "common classrooms" of your adopted school first so that all of the children will benefit (i.e. PE, ART, MUSIC). Last year our school had 15 our of 30 classrooms adopted which meant and extra 7,500 dollars that flew into our children's education via their teachers directly. I really believe it is worth the effort to register and work the issue.
Other options are of coures focusing on the Christmas holidays and coming up with a "angle tree" to purchase needed supplies for the school or the children within it. We also collect food as "payment" when we do child care and then submit it to the local foodbanks. Lots of ways to help!!!
