Boy--this didn't generate a lot of interest here but man is it a hit at the school. We have 60 kids signed up so far to do everything from reading from home to coming to our "club". It is very exciting and we're even encorporating lesson plans on probability....
Just a new idea I thought I'd post about. We are starting a Bobcat Book Club at our school in an effort to get our entire student body focused on one book and promote reading. It is going to be a "Club" that meets once a week for 8 weeks in the morning. We will have 2 groups, independent and non-independent readers. The independent readers will be assigned chapters and the following week will meet and discuss topics pertinent to that chapter (adapting to the grade level -- for instance older grades may discuss peer pressures etc). The non-independent readers will start with a 10 minute small craft and the listed to a book on tape for 15-20 minutes (depending on their interest span). We'll have available coloring charts, connect the dots and all sorts of fun things for them to do. At the end of the 8 week period, we will present the children with a ticket to attend a movie screening of the book we've just read. The first time out we are using Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and awarding the golden tickets to the readers at the end. They will see Willy Wonka with their families in the PE room (we can only watch G rated movies in our district) and receive free popcorn - sort of a Pillows and Popcorn celebration. Anyway--wanted to pass the idea along. We anticipate 5 different groups of readers...and we're keeping our fingers crossed that this will be a hit....hey--it worked for Oprah [img]smile.gif[/img] ....dianna
